Who Questions

  • Ask about person
  • Act as subject of the sentence
  • Example: Who is that woman?  That woman is my mother.

Whom Questions

  • Ask about person
  • Act as the object of the sentence
  • Example: Whom did you see? I saw my mother.

Whose Questions

  • Asking about ownership
  • Example: Whose keys are these? These keys are mine.

Where Questions

  • Asking in or at what place or position
  • Examples:
Where do you live?    I live in London.
Where are my boots?  Your boots are in the closet.

When Questions

  • Asking about time, occasion, moment
  • Examples:
When did you last see him?   I saw him yesterday.
When can I see you?        You can see me tomorrow.

Why Questions

  • Asking for a reason, explanation
  • Examples:
Why were you late?     I was late because my brother was in the bathroom.
Why was he late?      He was late because his sister was in the bathroom.

Why don’t

  • Making a suggestion
  • Example: Why don’t you take a nap?  I don't take a nap because I'm not sleepy.

What Questions

  • Asking for a specific thing, object
  • Examples:
What‘s the matter?   "Today I am really sad"

What time is it?   It's quarter to eight.
What kind of music do you like?  I like heavy metal music.

Which Questions

  • Asking about choice
  • Examples:
Which is better exercise – swimming or tennis?    Swimming is better exercise than tennis.
Which of the applicants has got the job?   Peter has got the job.

How Questions

Examples:
How does it work?   You need to wind it up to make it work.

How much Questions

  • Asking about quantity or price
  • Used with uncountable nouns
  • Example: How much are those earrings?   Those earrings cost 25 euros.

How many Questions

  • Used with countable nouns
  • Example: How many people were there?   There were a hundred people.

How often Questions

  • Asking about frequency
  • Example: How often do you go swimming?   I go swimming twice a week.

How far Questions

  • Asking about distance
  • Example: How far is it from your house to your school?   It is 25 km from my house to my school.
